This was a 2 week private tour catering for just two of us. Travelling in July. There were two different parts the trip - horse trekking in Southern Kyrgystan ( Allay mountains starting out from Osh and then 4WD tour from Osh to Bishkek via Arslanbob, Kazarman, Song Kul lake, and Karakol. Our trip was well organised by Azi who was based in Osh and the horses and horseman and guide were excellent. We stayed in yurts for most of the trip and these were on the whole quite charming. I would say the highlight of the trip was with the horses and I would do something like this again. The drive from Osh to Bishkek was a little disappointing as the roads were invariably quite rough making journey tmes long and sometimes a bit tedious. I think we were too ambitious in the distances we chose to travel. I think the worst was driving along both sides of the huge Issk Kul lake which actually wasn't particularly very picturesque and scarred a bit by ugly and redundant concrete fixtures left by the Russians when they left in 1991. Our driver was perfectly competent but didn't speak much and didn't play music which would have been a good alternative to talking to us on a long trip. This contrasted with Tamriz who had driven us in the Pamirs in Tajikisatan a previous year with the same company. Tamriz spoke very good English and gave us lots of useful and interesting background about history, geopgraphy and politics of the areas we travelled in. The music Tamriz played was all from central Asia which really helped to add to the feel of being there- western music would have been completely out of place!. I couldn't recommend him enough! I would recommend Visit Alay. It was particularly good to be using a local and competent company rather than a big international and faceless tour company.

We were so excited to do our tour with Visit Alay but unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. The tour was disorganised, communication was terrible, and Visit Alay's website was completely misleading in regards to what was included. Our driver did not speak English and was unable to answer any questions or provide any information on the places we visited, even though Visit Alay's website stated that "all our tours feature expert local guides" and "you will have an experienced local English speaking driver who... will also serve as a translator if you want to ask additional questions". When we questioned Sali, the company owner, we were told that the first two days of the tour are about acclimatisation and therefore there is no need for an English-speaking driver. After crossing into Tajikistan, we were handed over to a non-English speaking taxi driver who dropped us at a hotel in Karakul, where we were left for 24 hours without any information as to what was happening next. Three days into the tour, Visit Alay lost our GBAO permits. The worst part was that Visit Alay tried to blame us for losing the permits, even though the permits had only ever been in the possession of the Visit Alay driver and had never been given to us. We wasted half a day trying to resolve this issue. Due to the poor organisation, there wasn't time to do some of the activities described in the itinerary (such as the yak tour) and on two days there was no lunch (no explanation was offered). At the end of the tour, we contacted Sali and explained that it seemed unreasonable that we should pay full price, given that the tour had not delivered what was promised - and especially because for one full day (of a seven day tour) we did not have a guide or driver at all, when we were abandoned in Karakul. Sali agreed to remove the cost of the GBAO permits (USD35) but when we suggested that the discount should be more, he threatened to call the police, and sent a driver to confront us at our hotel in Dushanbe. The Pamir Highway is an amazing journey, and the scenery is incredible. I absolutely recommend visiting this special place - however choose a trustworthy company to travel with. I do not recommend Visit Alay.

An unforgettable trekking experience with Visit Alay! We had an absolutely incredible experience on the 7-day / 6-night ‘Pamir-Alay Mountains & Lenin Peak Base Camp Trek’ with Visit Alay, June 2025. We did this trek as a private tour with seven friends, and from the very first contact until the final day, everything was handled with exceptional professionalism. The communication beforehand was clear, responsive, and reassuring. Visit Alay went above and beyond to make this trip possible for us two weeks before the official start of the trekking season, which truly shows their flexibility, commitment, and experience. During the trek, everything was perfectly organized; transport, accommodation, logistics, and guides were all seamless. Our guides were knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely caring, and we always felt safe and well supported. Even when adjustments were needed, they showed improvisation skills and problemsolving ability, ensuring everything ran smoothly and stress-free. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking; vast, remote, and unforgettable. Sharing this experience with friends, in such a spectacular environment made it truly special. This trek was a fantastic adventure in an extraordinary landscape and it exceeded all our expectations in every way. A huge thank you to the entire Visit Alay team for making this such a memorable and flawlessly executed experience!

A Truly Special Guide for the Pamir Highway, Travelling the Pamir Highway from Osh to Dushanbe with Kokon (through Visit Alay) was the highlight of our trip ( we were a group of 4). He’s a safe driver, speaks excellent English, and knows the entire country inside out—but what stood out most was his kindness, honesty, and warm spirit. Kokon made us feel completely at ease, even in the most remote places and brought the journey to life with his stories and humour. If you’re heading to the Pamirs, ask for Kokon. You won’t regret it, and don't forget to tip your guide! :)
